ISL- India’s Leap to World Football !
ISL -Beginning of a new era for Indian football. In the world of football, India is still a toddler with a promising future ahead. India is rousing towards the dreamland of football which is ruled by football kings like Germany, Brazil, England etc. Have you ever wondered why a country like India with the rich heritage in sports is left behind in the field of football? Indian football always faced many problems like Lack of professional approach by the club officials, less interest of Indians for the football and less interest by big brands for sponsorships etc. But for the last few years, India started to change slowly and became more focused on improving our position as a football-loving country.
Many football tournaments were initiated with the aspiration of making football more popular in India and added some color to country’s rich culture. Indian super league (ISL) is football league which played a large role in the growth of football in India. The Indian Super League was launched on 21 October 2013 in partnership with IMG, Reliance Industries, and Star Sports and the All India Football Federation. Indian super league started the glorious journey of football with eight teams, Atletico de Kolkata, Chennaiyin FC, Delhi Dynamos, FC Goa, Kerala Blasters, Mumbai City, NorthEast United and Pune City. The season began with the victory of Atlético de Kolkata against Mumbai City for a score of 3–0. The first goal was scored by Fikru Teferra.
The inaugural final was held on 20 December 2014 with Atlético de Kolkata becoming champions after defeating Kerala Blasters 1–0 at the DY Patil Stadium. ISL was changing the point of view of India on football. ISL ranks the fifth highest football league in average attendance around the world, behind only Bundesliga, EPL, La Liga and Serie A, and ahead of the USA’s popular MLS, French Ligue 1 and Mexico’s Liga MX.The acclamation of India for ISL spurs us on towards recognizing the ultimate dream of giving rise to a footballing nation.
The 2017–18 Indian Super League season will be the fourth season of the Indian Super League and will start on 17 November 2017 and the regular season will conclude on 4 March 2018. Two new sides will join in the new season in the league as expansion franchises: Bengaluru FC and Jamshedpur FC.
As for the development of Indian players, ISL introduced the concept of Marquee Players. Before the establishment of ISL, even the Indian national football team only played against other Asian sprats. In fact, even they would beat us easily. Now, with the ISL Marquee Players, Indian players get a whole new outlook on football. The games against legendary footballers made Indian footballers realize how behind they are from others and as a result, they tried harder than ever and exposed to skillsets, mindsets, and playing styles that they’ve never seen before.
